How to Wash Sneakers in a Washing Machine (Step by Step)

First, check the care label. Only machine-wash shoes whose maker allows it — typically canvas, knit and many synthetic sneakers. Skip leather, suede and embellished pairs. Not sure? Read can you put shoes in the washing machine.

1. Prep the shoes

Knock off loose dirt, brush the soles, and remove laces and insoles. Wash laces separately in a small mesh bag; hand wash insoles.

2. Bag each shoe

Put one shoe in each washing bag and close the zipper. A padded chenille bag keeps shoes from slamming the drum and each other.

3. Pick gentle settings

Use cold water, a gentle or delicate cycle, and a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Add a couple of towels to balance the load.

4. Air dry

Remove shoes from the bags, stuff with paper to hold shape, and dry at room temperature away from heaters and direct sun. Avoid the dryer unless the maker says it's safe.
